My first book Called to Lead is hot off the press. The official launch/pub date was December 3, 2024.
A host of emotions about getting this book completed are welling up inside. At times I find it hard to describe but excitement, relief, anticipation - all these and more - are swirling around inside me. All because my book Called to Lead has made its debut in the world.
Some may wonder why I wrote the book and are seeking to get more insight on what it contains. If that describes you, I have a gift for you: your FREE copy of my book.
During the course of my career, leadership positions have found me. Early on, I struggled with figuring out what to do. Fortunately for me, I had people like stand out leaders who helped me figure it out. Not so much by telling me what to do, but by asking questions and offering advice when they knew I was struggling.
But every new leader doesn't have someone who can show them the way to do it right. That's why I wrote Called to Lead: to show first time leaders how to ramp up the learning curve on their leadership journey.
It gives guidance on what to do when a leadership position finds you.
My hope is that by reading it and practically applying what is written will result in minimizing damage to yourself (aka your career) and to those you lead.
When most folks ask who Called to Lead is written for, it is tempting to say that it is written for anyone in a leadership position. And, to some extent, that is true. Anyone in a leadership position can benefit from the information.
But my greatest desire is that those who are stepping into their first leadership position will read, digest and apply what I have written on the pages of my book.
First time supervisors and managers are often promoted to a leadership position because they were excellent individual contributors. They were effective followers who were outstanding in leading themselves.
Secondarily, those who promote first time supervisors will benefit from Called to Lead because it serves as a leadership roadmap, which is key to succeeding as a new leader.
Flying by the seat of your pants is so overrated, especially when it comes to leading people. To minimize collateral damage, read my book to gain insights on what you need to become a leader who leads.
In Called to Lead, I share firsthand experiences of taking on different leadership roles, revealing the valuable lessons learned along the way.
It is a transparent account addressing pressing concern faced by first-time and frontline leaders in all sectors - how to navigate the uncertain terrain of new leadership positions. With wisdom and relatability, Gwendolyn explores her struggles and triumphs, offering a unique blend of personal anecdotes and theoretical insights. Called to Lead goes beyond conventional leadership manuals by delving into the nuances of leading oneself before others. It presents a fresh perspective on the age-old debate of whether leaders are born or made, underscoring the fact that leadership skills are honed over time, often through challenging experiences. This roadmap stands apart with its potent mix of personal leadership stories and practical advice. It aims to empower individuals to embrace their innate leadership potential, even when the path seems daunting. The contents are as much about self-discovery and character development as they are about managing others.Called to Lead offers an enlightening, honest, and engaging exploration of leadership. It provides a compass for those who find themselves on the precipice of leadership, showing them how to navigate this new terrain and become the leaders they were born to be.
Called to Lead was a long time coming, in part because I did not know quite where to start and/or how to put things together. But I am very fortunate that I was introduced to an excellent publisher who picked up my manuscript. Morgan James is excellent. They alleviated some of the mystery and perplexity launching my first book.
My husband and I self-published a children's book. It was a great book, but we did not have a broad distribution network. That problem is eliminated with Morgan James. I am happy to report that Called to Lead can be purchased from a number of outlets, including the ones listed below:
Perhaps you know you have a book in you that you need to write, and the world needs to read. If that describes you, please reach out to me at Contact Coach Gwen. I would be happy to assist in making the introduction.
